RPG-Zauberflöte

In spring 2019, W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte was presented as an interactive fantasy role-playing game (modeled on Dungeons & Dragons). Young fantasy enthusiasts — none of whom were musicians — collaborated closely with the singers to conceptualize, stage, and bring the project to life.

In addition to the reinterpretation of the characters and stage setting, the audience had to solve various puzzles and complete challenges to prevent serious consequences for the opera’s characters. For example, the audience had to ensure that Tamino believed the Speaker in the famous speaking scene.

Failing a challenge could result in Tamino killing Sarastro in the finale of Act I. As a result, multiple significant deviations from the original storyline were possible throughout the performance.
